Visit to Chinatown

On Sunday we went to Chicago's Chinatown to watch the Chinese Lunar New Year Parade. This year marks the Year of the Dragon which represents luck and prosperity. The wonderful scent of Chinese food wafted through the air and we were treated to a Lion Dance prior to the start of the parade. Unfortunately we witnessed quiet a bit of rude behavior which but a damper on the day's festivities. We arrived early enough to secure a good spot to watch the parade only to have groups of people arrive right before the start of the parade and stand right in front of us. Honestly I was quite taken aback at what I witnessed.

We decided to leave early and made our way through the throngs of people. We could not go right to get out of Chinatown which is where we needed to go to catch the train so we found a clearing to the left and followed a group of other people who were trying to leave as well. As we made our grand escape we discovered that we somehow got caught in the actual parade route with no escape. Um hello, I went to see the parade not be in it! There was a tall, Caucasian gentleman who also got swept up in the parade route and made the best of it by waving his lengthy arm and yelling Happy New Year to the crowds of people. It was like an episode of Seinfeld. We laughed all the way home. I told my co-worker, who is Chinese of our experience and she laughed so hard that tears ran down her cheeks. All in all in was quite the experience. I will go back, just not when there is a large function. It was difficult to get great pics once the parade started, but here are a few of my favorites.

Benjamin Moore Paints

I recently bought a Groupon for Benjamin Moore paint. I am a fan of their paint, the deal was good and I have a room that needs help. Each time I wanted to get to the store or spend time figuring out a color selection, something would come up that needed attention and my hopes to focus on painting got pushed to the side. I find the whole paint process painful. It overwhelms me, so I can easily be distracted by something else that needs attention. So now I came down to the wire with the Groupon expiring tomorrow. I needed to hit the paint store tonight or lose my great deal. Today at lunch I spent my hour perusing the Benjamin Moore website. What a lovely feast for the eyes and their new color palette called Storybook, took my breath away. Lovely!

I settled on linen, pretty generic, but with more time and more money I will definitely explore this collection. Old world, with rich organic tones and their pictures from their site capture the colors of the Storybook line. My style to be certain.
Well done Benjamin Moore, well done!

Pantone color selection for 2012 is Tangerine Tango. I'm not sure how that bodes for us blondes. Orange has never been one of my better colors. However I am starting to see it make its way into the fashion, design and elsewhere. Merry Christmas! I have been missing for awhile, but hope to start posting again with more frequency in the coming days. It has been a busy time these last couple of months, however things have slowed down so my hope is to get back to blogging! This picture was taken at our local forest preserve a week ago. Recently Miss Reba and I participated in the 2 million dog walk for comparative oncology studies between humans and dogs. It was a great experience and we met many wonderful people and quite a few cool dogs of all sizes, colors and shapes! Surprisingly everyone behaved themselves too!

Civil War Reenactment

It's not everyday these guys show up in your "backyard". This weekend our local historical society held a Civil War Reenactment in our park. We walked down to see the battle. Great historical lesson for the kids and it was rather fun and interesting to watch. We spoke to several reenactors and they really enjoy what they do. The Union won the day we were there, however rumor has it the South won the next day. I could hear the cannons even when I was home and smelled their campfires on Saturday evening. A little step back in time, even the "wee ones" play their part. Are they not the cutest!

Summer or Fall

Spent a beautiful couple of days in Grand Beach, Michigan by New Buffalo. Warm weather with trees that looked on fire with with gold, orange and red against the bluest of skies. Wonderful food, friends and drinks. One red convertible with four gals driving on the highway surrounded by fall finest show. Apples, pumpkins and gourds of every color and shape. Sailboats on Lake Michigan, walking on the beach barefoot collecting rocks and beach glass. Beautiful moonlit night with stars sparkling in the sky against the backdrop of Lake Michigan.

Coming home to a wonderful neighbor who brought over two big pumpkins from her garden along with the the last pickings of peppers, tomatoes, brussel sprouts and heirloom apples.

Turning Twenty

Tomorrow marks the day when the boy is no longer a teenager, turning the big "20". I figured he deserves a visit at school tomorrow from dear old mom and dad . We shall arrive with the cake that is in the oven, a gift and one giant puppy that is going to tag along. I wonder if the cake shall survive or for that matter will we. I'm not sure taking the big puppy is one of my better ideas, but I thought it would do her good to see that he is ok. Since he lives in a house, she should have room to roam, pee, shred things and whatever else she fancies. I don't think I will clean it up either and I will let him nag me the way I did to him these past years.

Turning twenty is momentous. I remember quite well hitting that mark. While you are still not considered legal age to drink, you are by all accounts considered an adult. So if he is an adult, does that now make me old? Meh- I'm not going to dwell on that thought. Needless to say, tomorrow should be interesting and hopefully I will be here at the end of day tomorrow having survived the adventure with the big puppy.

Happy Birthday big guy and welcome to adulthood and yeah and sorry if you step in pee. We will get to it later.

Great Pyrenees - My Naughty Girl

Sometimes you may not capture the clearest picture and yet the photo you take is one that you will always treasure. Such is the case with this picture. This would be my naughty puppy who was busted on Monday licking the butter dish clean. She never heard me sneak up on her; that is how incredibly focused she was on the task at hand. She is still a puppy too! I must say I did get a good laugh as did my Facebook friends. The Great Pyr is quite different from any breed I have had and I must say she is proving to be quite interesting. Love her to pieces!

Wow- I have been way too neglectful of my blog. Between a new job, a new puppy and sending the kiddo back to college, time has gotten away from me, much like the weeds in my backyard. So I thought I would visit Etsy to find something pertaining to weeds to share with you, Off to their website I went and innocently typed in weeds, well guess what kind of "weed" I found. Ha, I found that rather amusing. I thought better than to post something relating to the wacky weed lest someone would think I was promoting its use. Instead I hit my pictures files and lo and behold, I remembered my milkweed pics. I love the feathery texture of the milkweed seeds.
I'm not sure I will reign in the weed problem in my backyard, rather I am waiting for the first frost to kill them all, oh and I hope every last mosquito dies with them. So while the garden may be looking pretty ratty, its time to tend to my blog again .

Cage Free Eggs and Your Local Farmer

Facebook is a wonderful resource and it is how I learned about a local farmer who delivers, cage free, organic eggs to our area. In addition, they also grow organic produce. Every two weeks they deliver right to our door and I am so thrilled with my eggs and produce. Yesterday, I had eggs, beets, peas and broccoli delivered. My broccoli was delicious and a vast improvement over store bought. I have not used the peas or beets yet. Stone Home Farm I am so glad I found you! Your eggs are the best. Just look at them -are they not fabulous! This country girl now living in the suburbs is tickled pink that she can now get fresh produce straight from the farm. I am thrilled to be able to support local, sustainable farming and it is also so much better for the body.

Strawberry and Spinach Salad

Fresh strawberries from our local farmer's market and spinach equal a healthy and tasty salad. One of my spring/summer favorites, this salad is super easy to make. I love the the farmer's markets!

Ingredients

2 bunches spinach, rinsed and torn into bite-size pieces
4 cups sliced strawberries
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup white wine vinegar
1/2 cup white sugar
1/4 teaspoon paprika
2 tablespoons sesame seeds
1 tablespoon poppy seeds

Directions

In a large bowl, toss together the spinach and strawberries.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar, sugar, paprika, sesame seeds, and poppy seeds. Pour over the spinach and strawberries, and toss to coat.

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day. My dad holding my son - the grandson he barely got to know. It is one of the few pictures I have with my dad and my boy. God took him too soon. My dad did not have much in terms of material possessions, but he was a pillar of strength. He carried his lunch in a metal lunch bucket as he slogged off to work in the knitting mills, a job I am sure he did not care for in order to provide for his family. He loved to play practical jokes, including "pull my finger" and liked to laugh in a spooky laugh. He loved to chat with anyone. He ate cereal for supper on a Sunday night and was always on the lookout for shoes that felt comfortable on his feet, which hurt him a great deal - thought he never complained. He was a solid husband and father and loved his family. He epitomized what Father's Day honors.

I miss you daddy and love you so very much.

Great Pyrenees

After countless hours of searching the internet for dogs and puppies to possibly adopt and after meeting a few that would not fit with our family, we finally met our new love. Meet Reba our 7 month old Great Pyrenees adopted from Animal House Shelter" in Huntley, Illinois. Yesterday we did a road trip to meet a young male dog that I saw on the internet. When we got to the shelter we learned that he was not cat friendly and upon meeting him, his energy level was quite high. However Newton, thank you for bringing us to the one we were supposed to meet, our sweet Reba. One of the staff overheard me say that we like big dogs and saw our disappointment that Newton was not for us and he asked if we would consider a full bred Great Pyrenees. I know how big they get and the grooming involved and had just a moment of hesitation, but said we would take a look at her. You know how the rest of the story goes, so please meet Reba - and I am sure I will have plenty of more stories to tell as we experience the joy of a new puppy - and yes she is still a puppy!

Too Hasty Perhaps and Dog Rescue

Its been over a week since I lost my sweet Lucky and not quite a week since I decided to quit blogging and now I feel perhaps in my despair I made a hasty decision. I feel stronger, not an emotional wreak. Maybe the turbulent waters I have been mired in will lead to calmer waters ahead. I am not sure. I do know that I am not ready to walk away from this blog and I regret that I jumped into those waters without thinking.

When I lost sweet Lucky, it devastated me. He brought me great joy in what has been a few years filled with many downs. I learned something this week, being a dog owner is part of my identity. I feel lost without one, a bit like Peter Pan searching for his shadow. Financially I cannot afford to go through a breeder for a new pup, so I am in the process of searching for that special friend through dog rescue. It is not the first time I adopted a dog. I can never replace my sweet Lucky and there is a special place in my heart reserved just for him, but I also know he would want me to experience joy again with a new friend. I hope you will join me on my journey and forget what I wrote earlier about ending my blogging. Surely calmer waters and brighter days are ahead.

Heartbroken

With this being a holiday weekend I was not going to post on my blog, but given this morning's events I needed to post.

Yesterday he ran through the door with a toy in his mouth excited that our son surprised us and came home early from college. This morning at 6:30am he took his last breath in the emergency vet's office as we put him to sleep after a unknown tumor ruptured in his stomach. RIP my dear sweet Lucky - we love you and you will be missed - until we meet again at the Rainbow Bridge.

Garden Lettuce and stuff

A four day weekend starts on Friday - what to do - garden and maybe clean the windows. I have already planted several varieties of lettuce. I purchased tomatoes, peppers and few other goodies at the local garden center today and plan to get them in the ground this weekend. The lettuce I planted in containers and a garden bag and hope to do several other container plantings on my deck. Was totally enthralled of my discovery of orange mint today. The scent is heavenly. Has anyone ever used it? I bought one plant to try. Here is hoping for good weather over my long weekend.

The Big Reveal

For many years I have had stick straight hair and over the last few years my hair started getting a curl. My mom has Shirley Temple curls, so I guess I know who I got it from. Well on Sunday, I finally embraced the curl instead of blow drying it straight. The humidity around here seems to be getting worse and was creating a nightmare for my hair. I received lots of compliments and several people told me I look like Roxie Hart from Chicago. You be the judge. However this is probably one of the only times I will reveal myself on this blog - so be nice or I will go back into hiding.

Lilac Tea

What a fun filled and jam packed weekend. This weekend was the kickoff to our Village's annual Lilac Time festival. One of the overriding events is the selection of the Lilac Queen and her court a longstanding tradition in our community. This year I am one of the co-chairwomen for the Lilac Princess program. The girl's are selected by judges based on their community involvement, school involvement and their poise and grace. The girls are all quite accomplished young women. One of the events they attend is a tea at the local newspaper editor's home which was built in the mid 1800's. Tea is served in vintage tea cups and finger foods are served. The girls are dressed in their formal gowns and tiaras. It is quite a girly event and very lovely. Are the flowers not beautiful and look at the wonderful tea foods. They were delicious!

A Ducky Good Time

For years I have been living with wetlands in my back yard and my neighbors yards thanks to poor engineering on the part of our local village. It is quite a problem and one that I will not bore you with the details, but suffice to say its a huge problem. The one benefit of this mess is that it attracts wildlife. For over twenty years when the water comes so do the mallard ducks, but never have we had babies until this morning. Mamma duck debuted 10 sweet little ducklings this morning and I could not grab my camera quick enough, so the photos are not the best. I was getting dressed for an event to attend. However I decided to debut these sweet babies on my blog and will conntinue to keep you updated on my gang of 10.

Pie and Magnolias

I have been doing a little spring cleaning on my blog - I hope you like the new look. Still have more to do, all in good time. Spent the day making my first ever apple pie from scratch, and I must say it turned out quite tasty. I found the recipe in one of my old cookbooks and the crust is from an old Pennsylvania Dutch cookbook. Flaky crust thanks to the lard I used. Yes, you read that right - lard!! While it was baking, I went outside and took a few pictures of the neighbors magnolia tree. First day in quite a while where we had blue skies and sun. Magnolias being delicate in nature, they took a bit of a punch this year with our cold, wet and snowy weather. Still I feel I got a few great shots.

Now back to that pie - the crust, while not the best looking made up for its looks in its taste. All the rolling and efforts to get into the pie plate I forgot to pinch the sides -drat. I think that always makes a pie look pretty and it so easy to do. Oh well, next time. I hope to do more pie baking as summer fruits become available. There is a sense of accomplishment when you make something new and it tastes really good. A pie from a box may look pretty, but if it tastes like the box, what is the point. Wasted calories I say -if you are going eat pie than do it right and oh yeah don't forget the ice cream!

A Healing Spot - Grand Beach Michigan

Just got back yesterday from an overnight trip to Grand Beach, Michigan. I stayed at the lake home of one of my co-workers/friend. The home sits right on Lake Michigan. I walked along the private beach collecting beautiful stones that I will add to my pond and to a vase inside my home. We drank wine and ate at a wonderful little restaurant called Soe Cafe that served sustainable food . The food was outstanding! See review at the Daily Candy. We shopped in New Buffalo - quaint town where I stayed with girlfriends a few years ago.

The pic below shows the stairs down to the beach, however the lower stairs were washed away, so to get down to the beach we needed to go a different way. Look at view going up the stairs - just a tad bit daunting, but I was up to the task and did them twice -great workout! The views were breathtaking and the weather was perfect and sunny on Saturday after and cloudy start to the morning. Early in the morning I sat outside by myself and drank in the sounds of the lapping of the water against the shoreline enjoying my coffee and snapping pictures of the lake. Lots of boats dotted the water - filled with early morning fishermen. This place has a healing element and I found it quite peaceful and calming. Words cannot express my deep appreciation to my friend for opening up her home and for her hospitality.

However sticker shock on gas prices - seems I am going to have hold off on the mini road trips for awhile.

I'm not sure why this was placed here, but with views like those above it makes for the perfect spot, beckoning you to take a seat.

My love of barns most likely started when I was a young girl and spent many hours at my grandfather's barn exploring and making discoveries along the way. The first photo is a pic of that particular barn which now belongs to my brother. While old and showing its age (built in the 1700's) it still brings back wonderful memories and stirs my soul for a simpler time. I snapped it a few days ago while visiting my family in my beloved Pennsylvania.

As we were driving back to Illinois yesterday, I started snapping pics of random barns and farm homes along the Pennsylvania and Ohio turnpike. You too may have seen them dotting the landscape if you have ever traveled on the turnpike. Many show their age, as my family's old barn, and yet there is still a beauty in their tired boards and roofs. They beckon you to take pause and slow down. If they could speak, I could only imagine the stories they could share. I realized that traveling at 65mph plus and snapping pics gives a unique effect that captures the fast pace we live in today versus the simplicity and slower pace of yesteryear. They are not crystal clear pics and yet I love them. I did however realize that it is better to have an open window versus a closed one. One problem - my head felt like it would blow off as I was snapping. On a sidenote - we had rain, snow, sleet and sun as we traveled yesterday.

I decided that on future road trips I would take pictures of these "weathered old friends" wherever I go. I know others have already done this, but this is part of my journey. I will share them with you as I go. My one wish would be that people had the resources to restore these iconic beauties that have sheltered feed and livestock for generations so that they can be preserved for future generations.

One more day until the start of my official spring break and my visit to my sweet Pennsylvania. I'm thrilled to be going home, but sad at the same time... this is the first time my son will not be making the journey with us. I snapped this pic the last time I was home. It is not the best, but I think it captures my mood. Going home, but there is a sadness to this picture, do you agree? I always find geese flying in the air somewhat sad. I'm not sure why.

I use Aveda hair products. I "heart"their products; they are earth friendly and good to my hair. I have been using their products for years, have been a loyal customer and use my rewards card faithfully. The problem is I never check my reward points. I always forget. Well this weekend that changed. I checked my points and was like - cool I have lots of points to redeem and so I did! What did I choose - cleaning products-ha. My products arrived today. Nothing too fancy, but I am thrilled and I still have quite a few more points to redeem. I love Seventh Generation laundry detergent and now I can try several of their other products and again they are earth friendly and I am all about that.

Now back to Aveda - um, why have I not tried Pure Abundance hairspray sooner? Perfect for my thin hair; it does not weigh it down, has great hold and smells great. Love it! It's now on my favorites list.

So now I can do my laundry and dishes and have bouncy and behaving hair at the same time. It's all about the hair - bad hair day = a not so happy camper.

A Touch of Spring

I have been rather sketchy with posting. Feeling rather uninspired, I needed the break. I'm beginning to feel more rejuvenated and today was a little perk. I took a vacation day today - and it did not disappoint. Spring is beginning to unveil her loveliness and while old man winter may still be lurking it felt good to go outside and see hints of green. My pussy willows always make me happy as they usher in the season. They are another one of my favorite things. The two bushes I have in my yard were purchased on Ebay and this year they are finally the size I have been waiting for. So I leave you dear readers with a few pics from my yard and of my pussy willows. Brighter days are ahead.

To Japan

One of the items on my "bucket" list has been to travel to Japan during the time of the blooming of the Sakura aka cherry blossom. While I know I most likely will never get there, today my heart is with the people of Japan. Today I pray we will all take a moment and say a prayer or offer a special thought for the Land of the Rising Sun and its people. I took this pic at the Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford, Illinois a beautiful and serene place I love going to. The cherry blossoms are from my tree. They are so lovely and fragile. Listen to this lovely Fantasy on a Japanese Folk Song by Samuel R. Hazo. It was a musical piece my son's band played in high school and was one of the most touching pieces I ever heard. Found this version on You Tube and it seemed appropriate to attach with this post. Across the ocean, please know their are so many of us praying for you Japan.

It's been awhile since I have blogged. I needed the break and I have been super busy. I wanted to load these pics about a week ago when we had the most amazing ice melt. It iced over during the night, but the next day the sky was picture perfect blue and the ice started to melt. Mother natures own prisms. It was beautiful and on my lunch hour I was able to grab of few pics. As the ice melted and dropped to the ground it made the most incredible sounds - a tinkling sound created by the little pieces of ice. Just stunning - enjoy!

Sorry I have been missing in action lately. Finally getting over a flu that kept me home from work for 3 days. It was a nasty bug. It has been all over the news about how the midwest was "hammered" by a blizzard last night. We had thundersnow and winds that howled at 61mph and we woke up to 18" of snow and drifts that were even higher. So here are few snow day pics from my home. hHopefully at some point I will be able to get out and take pictures at other locations. But after helping to shovel, I think I will stay inside today make some tea and enjoy my day off.

How delicious is this? The color, the scalloped edges - be still my girlie heart. LoveandKnit's shop on Etsy has quite a lovely selection of knitted beauties. Such talent! This is what I hope to aspire to with my knitting. Yes, I have kept my goal to learn knitting. A fellow coworker at my office is teaching me during our lunch hour. It was rather funny, because my first lesson generated quite a bit of interest from fellow co-workers who knitted at one point in their life. Perhaps others will be inspired to pick up their needles. I vow to get to this point one day - to create such loveliness and I will swirl and twirl in my pink, knitted sweater created by me!

Last evening we received a small dusting of snow and what appears to be quite a bit of activity during the evening into the earlier morning. I shot these pics when I got up this morning. Small footprints could be seen everywhere - telltale signs that we had visitors. I wonder if I had followed them, where would they lead? Did they stop for a drink in the pond or where they just passing through? Where do you leave your footprints? Do you stop and take in what is around you and savor it or are you just passing through?

Embracing the New Year - Wabi Sabi Style

2011 has arrived and while somewhat cliché I do find a new year as an opportunity for a fresh start. 2010 has taught me many lessons, as it was a year marked with change, and at times those changes proved to be quite stressful. This post however is not to dwell on those challenges, but more to embrace the new year with the ever popular New Year's Resolutions -however I am not calling mine resolutions, because resolution is one where you set yourself up for failure. Meh, I don't want failures, I want to embrace change with the knowledge that I may stumble along the way. Life is not perfect: it is rather messy... so here we go, my list of things I want to embrace for the new year.

To embrace a Wabi Sabi lifestyle - lets face it life is not perfect and I'm tired of trying to make it so.

To include more legumes in my diet and to reduce refined sugar. The key word being reduce. Let me be honest, there is no way I can completely cut out sugar. I enjoy baking and eating the fruits of my labors! However, I know I can cut back.

To continue to develop my new found passion - photography.

To exercise more - yea, I know, we all say that. However, I have taken the first baby steps by signing up for a yoga class along with a dear friend of mine. I have never taken yoga, but have always wanted to. So there, I'm already on my way beginning this Thursday.

To plant a much larger garden.

To continue to develop my jewelry making, by making my own findings.

To take more baths in my whirlpool bath. Why do I have it if I am not going to use it that often?

To take better care of my feet - good shoes, arch supports (hey my chiropractor's assistant showed me that arch supports can be thin and not clunky) and just plain t.l.c. for my feet. They take quite a bit of abuse and deserve the attention. Along the same lines as my feet, to keep my sock drawer organized. For some unknown reason, I struggle with doing this.

To prepare my works clothes the night before, instead of standing at my closet at 5:30am trying to decide what to wear.

To buy quality clothes and only what I need, with the exception of cheap tees for layering.

One new thing I would like to learn this year:

To knit - would anyone like to teach me?

Now I do have a few loftier goals that I have chosen to keep to myself. The ones I have listed are ones I feel I can accomplish with a few stumbles along the way.

The pic is of an orchid each of us received last evening at the New Year's Eve party. In Eastern cultures the orchid represents purity and simplicity. How perfect was this gift from our hosts last evening to represent my chosen word for 2011 - Simplify.

We are getting ready to go to our friend's home to ring in the New Year. Tradition is that everyone brings a dish to share. I made Cherry Tomatoes Stuffed with Mozzarella & Basil -mini caprese. Recipe found at Fine Cooking. I always notice that pics in magazines that use fresh herbs, seems to show their herbs before they have soaked in the olive oil. There is no way they look that fresh that after soaking (see my pic -limp). Just an observation. If you know a special way to have basil look fresh after soaking, please let me know. Beautiful Horses on a Cold Winter's Morning

This morning my husband and I ventured over to the local equestrian center. I needed a "horse fix" so to speak and also wanted to take photos. I miss seeing horses on a daily basis and if my wallet permitted, I would someday love to own my own. However, that is not something I see in my near future, so this is the only way I know to get my "fix". They were eating and no matter how hard I tried to get shots without hay in their mouths it was next to impossible. Yet with the sun glistening off the snow, it was beautiful. On the way back we stopped at Panera's for their spinach and bacon quiche. It was a perfect morning. I love winter. I love snow! Everything is serene and peaceful. I do believe the world needs to slow down a bit, breath and enjoy what God and Mother Earth share with us. We only need to stop and look. I felt a sense of calm when I stood beside these gentle creatures and know that I must go back more often, perhaps as a volunteer. In the meantime, here are a few pics - I hope they bring you joy.

Once we came back, I put my leftover Christmas ham bone to good use and currently having it cooking in the crock pot. Tonight it is ham and bean soup with a loaf of Panera bread. My New Year's resolution - to have more days like today.

Roasting Chestnuts

Before Christmas, I was at our local market and found chestnuts. My intention was to make them on Christmas Eve, however we were full from our dinner and so they have been sitting on my kitchen counter until this evening. Tonight they went in the oven to be roasted. So good! I have not had chestnuts since I moved from Pennsylvania. I almost forgot how much I love them. To roast chestnuts I first washed and dried them. Cut an x in the flat side and put chestnuts on a baking tray and into a 400 degree oven for 20 minutes. Peel, salt and enjoy! Perfect on a cold winter's night.

Winter Solstice

Today is the Winter Solstice and the start of my winter break. My goal was to snap some photos of the beautiful, early morning pink skies we have been enjoying the last few days. I noticed these lovely shades on my drive to work in the morning, but alas today has been dingy and gray. Instead I snapped these pinecones as my winter shot for the solstice. One is the real deal and one that I modified for a more wintry look. We enjoyed a lovely snowfall last evening and today the air is damp and seeps into your bones. Small Gifts for the Office

Today I spent the day making pumpkin bread and chocolate covered pretzel logs to share with my co-workers. When cooled, I wrapped them in festive cellophane. I think they turned out rather well. Open house

Friday evening and today was my open house jewelry show "A Fine Little Christmas". Under twinkiling fairy lights and a Saturday snowfall, guests were able to shop while enjoying a glass of mulled apple cider or a glass of wine and other goodies. The event was great success and it was fun to socialize with friends, some who I am able to see quite often and others not as much. Somehow through preparing for the event and hosting it I forgot to take pictures prior,so the pics I did get was after everything was over. Love doing this and while it is quite a bit of work, I find that I am in my element, now if only I could make this a full time career.

I really am "diggin" this chair made out of recycled jeans. A friend of mine made a comforter out of recycled jeans for my son's bed and I love it. This chair would look so cool in his room, although he would have to fight me for it. It looks so comfy and down to earth, just my style. Found via Design Squish blog. I can imagine being curled up in this chair with a good book, a cup of tea and my best dog by my side.

Art Show

The next two weeks should be a busy time for me. I decided at the last minute to have an art open house featuring my jewelry and my friend's photography. I had shows at my house a few years ago, but for the last couple of years time seemed to slip by and I was never fully prepared. This year I threw caution to the wind and decided to go forth. Bistros

As mentioned in my earlier post, my woman's club held our annual fundraiser Friday evening - Bistro in the Burbs. I along with another friend were in charge of ticket sales and this of course impacted my blogging over the last couple of weeks. This is considered our major fundraising event. 20 local restuarants partipated by serving samples of their cuisine to taste. Everything was delicious! In addition, we had silent auctions and raffle packages. The funds we raise will be donated to local charities. I took a few pics to share with you. It was a lovely evening and if you are in town ( Chicago area) on 11/11/11- stop by for a night of wonderful food, awesome prize packages and great fun!

These ymmy cupcakes were donated by a local baker. I had the lemon one -yum! You can find her on Facebook at CAKE - her website is currently under construction.

RECAP

Wow, I cannot believe how quickly a week can go by. I need to be better about blogging, but lately finding the time seems next to impossible. So here is a recap of the past week. I spent last Saturday morning with my woman's club. One of the gals hosted a brunch and we made egg omelets in plastic baggies!! You put your eggs in a plastic baggie, squish it and add your favorite ingredients, ham, onion...., close the baggie and boil. The pic shows some of the offerings we had for the omelets. Now, I'm not sure about carcinogens being released into your eggs from the plastic baggies, but I suppose once in a while there is no harm and the clean-up for a large group was extra easy. This would be fun to do with kids.

Speaking of carcinogens, I long ago got rid of my cheap pots and pans and invested in stainless steel but I also love to cook with cast iron. I decided recently to pull out my 20 year old cast iron pans, season them with lard and get cooking. Here are a couple pics of the chili I made for Halloween. Good thing I made it earlier in the day, since we had over 75 witches and goblins come to the door!

Yesterday, we went to visit my son at school during parent's weekend. Spent a lovely afternoon with him. While I miss him terribly, I am comforted in knowing he loves his school. On the way back we stopped for gas and saw this sign as we exited off the highway. I freaking love this sign!! I love high school football and miss seeing my son play. I especially love small town football and this sign represents that- a sense of community. I'm rooting for this team, since they are currently in the playoffs and because this sign rocks.

Speaking of my woman's club, we have our annual fundraiser, Bistro in the Burbs this coming Friday evening.
A selection of 20 restaurants offer samplings to taste coupled with an open bar, raffle prizes and silent auction: it is a wonderful evening. I along with a dear friend are ticket chairs, hence another reason I have been missing. I hope to have pics to show you after the event is over.

Recently I purchased Granny Smith apples at the market and decided today to bake apple crisp. Rather than peeling them by hand, I pulled out of the deep recesses of my cabinets, my apple, peeler, corer from Pampered Chef. I forgot how much fun this little contraption is, and the apple slices... well you can see. Wouldn't you like to reach through the screen a just pluck one off the plate? Oh and the apple crisp made my house smelled heavenly. Fall, what is not to love?

Honestly, I cannot recall a more beautiful fall. While the last couple of days have been warm; Mother Nature has graced us with a spectacular show of color! My husband and I went for a walk yesterday in one of our local nature preserves and I went snap happy with my camera. I simply could not get enough pics of the trees. They appeared on fire with their branches drenched in golds, reds and yellows. Stunning - simply no other word can describe the color. I think one of these deserves to go on canvas, wouldn't you agree? I am leaning to the larger one in the right corner. Enjoy!
